There are a few reasons, but the biggest one is that clients are on different fee structures, and fees directly affect the net performance you see in your own account.
Granite primarily uses two billing models:
1. Fixed 3% annualized management fee
2. 1.5% management fee + 15% performance fee
Because these fee structures behave differently, they will naturally create differences between:
• The performance shown on the Granite website (which uses a standardized assumption), and
• The performance you see in your personal account, which reflects your actual, specific fee arrangement.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
How the fee structures affect what you see
• In lower-return or negative months:
Clients on the 1.5% + 15% performance fee structure may pay less in total fees than the 3% fixed-fee clients, because the performance fee is tied to profits. That can make their net performance look better than what is shown using a flat 3% assumption.
• In strong performance months/years:
The 1.5% + 15% structure may result in higher total fees than the flat 3% model, so those clients can see slightly lower net returns than what the website’s standardized performance would suggest.
In other words, even if the underlying trading strategy is exactly the same, net results will differ depending on which fee schedule applies to your account.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
What Granite shows in its published performance
For consistency and comparability, Granite has chosen to use the fixed 3% annualized fee assumption when reporting performance on its website and in standard reports.
• This creates one common reference point across all investors.
• It avoids having the published performance swing up or down just because of different client fee arrangements.
So, the performance you see on the Granite website is not customized to your exact fee deal; it is based on a standard 3% annualized fee model to provide a stable, apples-to-apples benchmark.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Estimated vs. official performance
It’s also important to understand the difference between:
• Granite’s live performance app / online figures, and
• Official audited performance from NAV Consulting.
The numbers you see:
• On the website and in the live app are estimates and for informational purposes only. They are designed to give you a timely, approximate view of how the strategy is doing.
• Official performance is calculated and verified by NAV Consulting, the fund administrator. Their statements and reports are considered the authoritative record of your actual returns and account values.
So if there is ever a discrepancy:
• Your NAV Consulting statements and year-end reports are the controlling documents and should be viewed as your true, final performance,
• While Granite’s live and website figures should be viewed as good-faith, best-effort estimates that may differ slightly due to timing, fee structure, and data updates.
Since the Keystone Strategy is very actively managed, very few options and ETF positions will be held long enough to qualify for long-term capital gains.
The good news is that the equity index options we use fall under Section 1256 contracts. By rule, gains and losses on these contracts are treated as 60% long-term and 40% short-term, no matter how long they are held.
In addition, the hedge fund is able to apply mark-to-market accounting on its ETF trades, which effectively eliminates costly wash sales.
At year-end, the Keystone Advantage Hedge Fund will issue each member a K-1 outlining their individual tax obligations.
